The property is located inside a building in the historic center of Palermo, which was the subject of reconstruction and restoration, managed by the PL5 studio.
The studio took care of the interior design of the apartment, reorganizing the spaces and intervening, in agreement with the couple of clients, in the choice of materials and with tailor-made solutions that redefine the environments, finding a dialogue with the existing valuable elements and which distinguish the property in a singular way.
The space of the house is divided into two levels: The ground floor is characterized by the pre-existence of a large portal made of tuff blocks. The pointed arch portal is the true protagonist of the house and divides the large living room: the living area is double height (more than 6 meters high), while the kitchen space is compressed to a lower height, here the portal frames a large custom island located in the center, behind it the perspective is closed by a custom-made system that covers the walls and the staircase leading to the sleeping area on the upper floor.
Going up the stairs, there are two bedrooms, the first equipped with an “en suite” bathroom, while the second is separated by two small rooms in succession that connect it to the bathroom via the custom-designed walk-in closet. The pre-existing tuff ashlar arches present on the walls become an opportunity to design suspended wardrobes that interact with the elements found.
It was decided to use resin as the main covering material, so that the existing stone could stand out at its best, changes in solid wood flooring were inserted in the sleeping area, to give greater warmth to the rooms, clearly defining the rooms, recalling the oak tones of the custom-made elements and of the staircase covering.
