The apartment is located in the heart of the lively Isola district, on the third floor of a well-maintained building from the 1960s.
The design challenge was to meet the clients’ request to create an additional room and a second bathroom compared to the original two-room layout.
The new project redesigns the floor plan with a clear distinction between the living and sleeping areas, connected by a transitional space that mediates between the different environments.
This functional band accommodates two bathrooms—one of which is directly accessible from the master bedroom—as well as the circulation area and a laundry/storage space.
The addition of a plasterboard ceiling not only fulfills a technical function but also introduces a sense of spatial compression that, by contrast, enhances the perceived width and brightness of the main rooms.

A large custom-designed wall unit acts as the scenic backdrop of the living area. It integrates the fixed furnishings of the kitchen and living room, as well as a service coat closet located near the entrance of the home.
Access to the sleeping area is provided by a concealed sliding door integrated into the wall unit, highlighted by two beveled panels that mark the passage and gently lead toward the more intimate part of the house.
The plaster geometries of the pre-existing boiserie have been reinterpreted in a contemporary key on the wall unit’s panels, giving the project a sense of unity and identity.
The same design language recurs in the bathrooms, where square tiles echo the framing of the master bedroom’s built-in wardrobe, creating a recognizable visual thread throughout.
The bathrooms appear as monochromatic volumes, in sharp contrast to the living area, which is dominated by white surfaces that amplify natural light and emphasize the lacquered tones of the wall unit.
The custom-made terrazzo countertops recall Milanese tradition, anchoring the project in the memory of local materials.
